Raider 'D' smothers Trojans

It wasn't a big night from one player that made the difference in Wright State's 69-47 win over the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. It wasn't a big shot at the end of the game that made a difference either.

It was a combination of great offense and defense in the opening minutes of the game that made the difference.

Wright State went on a 17-0 run to start the game. Troy Tabler and Ronnie Thomas each scored seven points during that drive. But it was the defense's ability to shut down UALR that left everyone talking after the game.

"We came out with the mindset that we were going to try to shut this team out as long as we could," said junior N'Gai Evans. "Basically our whole mind set was to focus on defense as long as we can."

Well, they did exactly that.

The Trojans were unable to find the bottom of the net until the 12:15 when Kelson Stewart made a free-throw to give UALR their first point of the game. Alex Garcia-Mendoza then made the first field goal of the half for the Trojans.

The Raiders allowed UALR to record just five field goals the entire first half.

"Our guys were playing really inspired," said head coach Brad Brownell. "You never know how things are going to go in games. When you get some positive momentum, it can be pretty powerful."

Pretty powerful indeed.

After the big scoring drive to start the game, Wright State had a number of players score. Cooper Land made his only three pointer of the first half to give the Raiders a 24-8 lead with just 8:34 remaining.

After a pair of Trojan free-throws Wright State went on a 9-0 run that was capped off by a pair of free-throws from Tabler. That gave him 16 points for the half as the Raiders ended the half with a 38-23 lead.

The second half started out the same way the first half did. Wright State went on a 15-5 run to start the half. Corey Cooperwood capped the scoring drive off with an old fashion three point play, connecting on a free-throw after being fouled on a made lay-up.

The Raiders were fairly quiet for the remainder of the half. They were outscored by UALR 19-16 in the final 11 minutes, but were still able to hold on to the 22 point victory.

Leading the way for Wright State was Tabler with 16 points, six of which came from behind the three-point arc. Cooperwood had three points to go along with his five points and Todd Brown and Vaughn Duggins each contributed with nine points each.

Wright State is now 8-4 on the season and undefeated when playing on their home court. The Raiders will now take nearly a week off for the Christmas holiday. Their next game is at the Nutter Center on Monday, December 28 against Sam Houston State.
