Wright State Women can't get the Win in Boston

By Kevin C. Smith
BOSTON - In a severe snowstorm, the Lady Raiders (4-5) arrived in Boston to challenge Boston College (6-5). Boston College proved to be too strong for the Raiders and got the win 62-56. The Wright State Women were able to fly out and go home after the game, even with 12 inches or more of snow here in Boston. Wright State will next travel down to Cincinnati to play UC on Dec 29th at 7pm.

Wright State knew this would be another tough battle for them. These two teams have only met once

before, in 2007. That game was also here in Boston and WSU suffered a 68-39 thrashing. They didn't want that to happen again. Boston is a tough ACC team and is in the top 100 teams nationally in eight categories. The team includes 6-6 Junior Carolyn Swords, ranked 3rd nationally in FG percentage (65.3) and 117th nationally with 15.6ppg. They also have two other players 6-2 or taller. Wright State has one player, Junior Tanni Scott who is 6-2. Under the boards they would be outmatched and that proved to be the case.

The first half opened with a 5-0 Boston lead before Senior Kanisha Ward opened Wright State's scoring. The Raiders would never get a lead and Boston College would open up a 13 point lead with 2:47 left in the half. Wright State would not give up and at the buzzer BC's lead was down to just 8, 27-19. As expected the size of BC players resulted in 14 points in the paint and 12 second chance points.

Wright State did turn the ball over 12 times in the half, for 12 BC points. BC gave the ball up 11 times, but WSU could manage to get three points from those turnovers. The Lady Eagles controlled the boards 23 - 8, while getting a blocked shot and two steals. The Lady Raiders shot 38.1% (8-21) from the field to 33.3% (10-30) for Boston. Senior Erica Richardson led the WSU scoring with seven points. Junior Ta-myra Davis and Sophomore Molly Fox each had 2 rebounds. Swords, with only 25 minutes of play did get a double-double with 10 points, 11 boards.

The second half saw Boston get an opening layup for get a 10 point lead, 29-19. However, Wright State had woken up during halftime and would fight BC throughout the second half. They would cut the lead down to four points on two occasions but Boston would not let them get any closer. Fox would provide some baskets to spark the team, getting eight points in the second half after being scoreless in the first. Ward and Sophomore Maria Bennett also sank eight and seven points respectively in the half, finishing the game with ten apiece. They jointly led the team's scoring.

Wright State shot 54.2% in the second half, finishing the game at 46.7% (21-45). However, the height and strength advantage of Boston was too much. BC owned the boards 42-17 and picked up a 38-26 advantage for points in the paint. Although WSU gave up the ball 21 times, BC surrendered it 22 times. However BC was able to get 21 points from turnovers to just 8 for the Raiders. In the end, Boston defended their home court with a win, 62-56.

Although this was a loss for the women, it showed a lot of improvement. They never gave up against a tougher team and except for turnovers, they are getting better as a team. They have one more nonconference game before Horizon League play starts. Hopefully they will be ready to make a good run through the HL. The Lady Raiders will travel to the University of Cincinnati on Tuesday Dec 29th for their last nonconference game. That game will start at 7pm. They will then open up HL play with three games on the road before returning to the Nutter Center on January 14th.
