Women Hold on for the Win over Valpo

By Kevin C. Smith
If you think a 17 point lead with 8:46 left is an insurmountable lead, you should watch more women's hoops! The Lady Raiders (9-15/5-9HL) were able to hold off Valpo (7-17/4-9HL) Thursday in the Nutter Center, but it was close. Wright State now faces Butler on Saturday at 3:00, not 1pm as previously advertised.

Valpo started the game with a 4-0 run until Junior Paige Lowe hit a jumper with 18:25 left in the first half. She was followed two minutes later by a three point shot from Junior LaShawna Thomas to take the lead 7-6. Wright State would not surrender the lead for the rest of the game, but my how they tried! With one second left in the first half, Sophomore Maria Bennett hit the second of her three treys to give the Raiders their largest lead of the half, going into the locker room with a 27-18 advantage.

The first half saw the Raiders hitting 44% (11-25) from the field while Valpo only hit 32.1% (9-28). Valpo did hold the lead on rebounds but only by a 17-16 advantage and both teams had 13 turnovers in the half. Both teams also picked up 12 points off those turnovers. Lowe and Bennett both had six points in the half to lead the offense. Thomas had five rebounds, leading the defense, followed by Junior Ta-myra Davis with four.

The second half provided the excitement. The Lady Raiders opened up a sixteen point lead with 16:23 to go. Valpo would fight back but couldn't make much of a dent in Wright State's lead. The Lady Raiders would have a seventeen point lead, 46-29, on a free throw by Sophomore Molly Fox with just 8:46 left in the game. That usually is an insurmountable lead for a team to overcome. But not in women's basketball, especially Wright State BBall! Valpo would fight their way back getting steals and causing Wright State turnovers until with just 1:11 left on the clock, the Raiders lead had disappeared to just a one point lead 51-50 providing for a nail-biting and exciting ending to this game. However for the last 1:11 the Lady Raiders would hit three free throws to just one by Valpo to hang on for the win, 54-51.

Some would say the game was sloppy. Valpo had 23 turnovers for 19 WSU points, while the Raiders gave it up 27 times letting Valpo have 26 points. The fouls in the game were a lopsided 21-13, with WSU garnering most of the calls! Valpo controlled the boards 33-30. Wright State shot 45.5% (20-24) while Valpo had a hard time hitting the bucket and only sinking 34.6% (18-52) of their shots.

The Raiders were lead by Senior Kanisha Ward, who put up 11 points to finish the night with 16. Ward also had four steals and four assists on the night as well, even after sitting out a few minutes due to an injury. Thomas was next with nine points and three assists. She also led the team with seven boards. Defensively Junior Tanni Scott was next with six rebounds in just ten minutes of play.

The Lady Raiders in eighth place in the HL, will now host the third place Butler Bulldogs (17-7/10-3HL) at the Nutter Center starting at 3pm Saturday. Just four games remain in the regular season and the Lady Raiders are trying to move up in the standings for a better seed in the Horizon League Tournament.
