Turnovers and Poor Defense Leads to Green Bay Win

By Kevin C. Smith
The Lady Raiders (8-13/4-7HL) hosted nationally ranked and second place in the Horizon League, UW-Green Bay (19-3/8-3 HL) Saturday in the McLin Gym. Green Bay walked away with an easy win, 74-50. Wright State now goes on the road for two games before returning to the Nutter Center to host Valparaiso on Thurs Feb 18 at 7pm.

Maybe the confusion over where (Sinclair v. Nutter Ctr?) and when (6pm or 2pm?) this game was to be played confused the Lady Raiders so much they couldn't get their minds on the game. Maybe beating Milwaukee Thursday just tired them out so they couldn't get their game together for Saturday. Maybe it was the snow. Whatever it was, Wright State had a poor showing against #23/20 Green Bay. The final score showed it.

Wright State has been plagued by turnovers this season and that continued in this game. However, not "closing the back door" allowed for constant scoring opportunities by the Lady Phoenix. You always expect this to be a tough game for the Lady Raiders but it should not have been this easy.

The Raiders tied the game at 2 apiece early, but Green Bay took a 4-2 lead with 17:32 and they never looked back. They would open up a 21 point lead with 2:03 left before going to the locker room with a 35-16 lead.

The Lady Raiders managed 30% (6-20) shooting while UW-GB was hitting 65.2% (15-23) including 4-7 from beyond the arc. Wright State was 0-6 from three point range. Green Bay got 20 of their points in the paint and picked up nine points from the WSU 13 turnovers. Green Bay also controlled the boards 14-9. In the half, Senior Erica Richardson sank 10 points and grabbed three rebounds. Junior Ta-myra Davis also grabbed three rebounds. Richardson was the only player to go to the line in the first half and she hit all four of her shots.

The second half saw Green Bay continue their dominance over the lack luster defense of Wright State building a 23 point lead with 12:12 remaining. Even with a short run by the Raiders to cut the lead to fifteen, the Phoenix rebuilt their lead to 26 with just 1:02 remaining. A last minute layup by Senior Kanisha Ward finished the game with Green Bay winning by 74-50.

Wright State finished the game with 23 turnovers for 22 Green Bay points. They shot 35.7% (15-42) for the game compared to 55.8% (29-52) for the Phoenix. Wright State stayed close in the rebound category, but UWGB pulled down 30 to 26 for the Raiders. Green Bay sank 10 out of 20 shots from beyond the arc, while Wright State could only manage 2 for 12 from three point land.

Richardson finished the game with 18 pts, six rebounds and one steal. Ward also finished in double digits with 12 points, two rebounds, three steals and four assists. Richardson had a perfect game at the charity stripe shooting 10 for 10.

The Lady Raiders, still tied for seventh in the Horizon League, now travel to UIC and Loyola before returning home again. They will host Valparaiso on Thursday Feb 18 at 7pm in the Nutter Center. I don't think the location or time will change.
