Wright State Baseball Drops Twinbill at Tulane on Saturday

WSU Staff report
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Wright State baseball team dropped a close game in the first game of a double-header at Tulane on Saturday. The Raiders fell behind 3-0 early and couldn’t grab the lead as they were out-hit nine-to-seven in the contest and couldn’t capitalize on three Green Wave errors. In game two, the Raiders allowed Tulane to score in only three innings, but the Green Wave put up crooked numbers in all three and defeated the Raiders 10-2 in the second game of a double-header at Turchin Stadium. The Green and Gold mustered only four hits, two coming from Jeff Mercer, while Kory Twede drove in both RBI’s in the nightcap.

A second inning run gave Tulane an early lead on Wright State starting pitcher Rylan Ostrosky. A bunt single and a stolen base put a runner on second with one out, before Steve Moritz doubled down the left-field line to push the Green Wave to a 1-0 lead. The Green Wave pushed their lead to 3-0 with a leadoff home run and an RBI double in the third inning, before WSU would get on the board in the top of the fourth. The Raiders collected a pair of runs in the inning – aided by a Tulane error – and cut the deficit to 3-2 in favor of the home team. With two outs in the inning, Jeff Mercer and Tristan Moore collected singles and both scored on a base hit by Kory Twede. On the Twede single, Mercer scored easily from second, while Moore charged around third and scored on an error by the catcher. A Tulane run in the fourth inning pushed their lead to 4-2, but WSU used an RBI single from R.J. Gundolff to keep the contest a one-run game heading into the eighth. The Raiders had the game tying run on second base with no outs, but relief pitcher Nick Pepitone got a pair of ground balls and a strikeout to end the Raiders threat. Tulane added a run in their half of the eighth off of relief pitcher Michael Schum to account for the final margin of 5-3. Ostrosky took the loss on the mound, falling to 0-1, as he surrendered four runs on seven hits and walked four batters. The senior struck out two in 6.1 innings of work in his second start of the season. At the plate, Twede was three-for-four with a run scored, while Moore collected the only extra-base hit of the game for WSU – going two-for-four – and scored a run. Gundolff collected the only RBI for the Green and Gold and Mercer scored the other run in game one. Wright State starting pitcher Travis LaMar got into some trouble in the first inning as he loaded the bases with one out and one run already across the plate. With the bases loaded, a two-RBI single gave the Green Wave an early 3-0 lead, but LaMar struck out a batter and got a ground ball out to end the threat and give the team a chance to answer. The Raiders responded with their first run in the second inning when Casey McGrew singled to start the inning and Jeff Mercer doubled to right-center field to put two runners on with nobody out. After a strikeout by Tulane starting pitcher Josh Zeid, Kory Twede grounded out to first base and plated the first run of the game for WSU. The Green Wave (5-3 overall) added four runs in the third inning on only two hits and ended the day for LaMar. Casey Henn came on to replace LaMar and allowed three runs on two hits and a pair of walks – with the other run in the inning being charged to LaMar. Henn tossed two-thirds of an inning in the appearance and gave way to Michael Meintel to start the fourth inning. Meintel worked a scoreless fourth, before Jordan Wolfe came on in the fifth, giving up three runs in the frame, as Tulane extended their lead to 10-1. The Green and Gold plated a run in the seventh when Mercer singled and Twede tripled to center field to drive in his second RBI of the contest, making the score 10-2 in favor of Tulane.. Mercer singled and doubled in the contest – the only multi-hit game for WSU – and Twede tripled and drove in both RBI’s for the Green and Gold. McGrew added a hit and Ryan Ashe coaxed a walk to account for the remainder of the Raiders offense. Wright State is now 1-6 overall on the season and will conclude their series with Tulane on Sunday, March 1. The Raiders will be looking for a series split with the Green Wave as the probable pitching matchup will pit WSU’s Michael Woytek against Tulane’s Jonathan Garrett, game time is scheduled for 2:00 Dayton time.
