Raiders (10-5, 3-1 HL) defeat Flames to split Chicago series

By Ryan Hehr
To just look at the score of Wright State's 67-47 win over UIC on Saturday, Jan. 2, most people would say the Raiders won easily. That wasn't the case though.

The Raiders came out slow and trailed for most of the first half. At halftime, Wright State only held a 29-25 lead. It wasn't until a 23-5 run in the second half that the Raiders were finally able to breathe comfortably.

This is a rarity for Wright State. When the Green and Gold have ended up with a win in recent games, it has been the result of a big first half run and the Raiders have had a comfortable lead the entire game.

In the game, Wright State had three players in double digits: Vaughn Duggins (17), Todd Brown (13) and Cory Cooperwood (10). Cooperwood also contributed with seven rebounds.

The win couldn't have come at a better time for the Raiders. Two nights previous they were stunned when Loyola defeated them for the first time in four seasons.

Now with the win, Wright State is hoping to have a little momentum as they prepare to play their biggest opponent of the year: Butler.

Not only are the Bulldogs a favorite to win the Horizon League title, they are also ranked in the top 25 nationally.

When asked about the big game on Friday, Head Coach Brad Brownell didn't have much to say.

"Right now? I've got all week to think about Butler," he said.

Wright State will take on Butler on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Nutter Center.

Injury Update

After coming off hip surgery three games ago, John David Gardner left Saturday's game after playing just seven minutes due to a figure injury on his left hand.
